Coastal Hybrid

Dillon Beach House is perched on a bluff, high above the northern California coast at the place where Tomales Bay meets the Pacific Ocean. It is subject to an incredibly dynamic and dramatic marine environment, affording unobstructed, panoramic views out to the horizon and spectacular vistas of water and light.

The renovation became an exercise in re-organizing, re-orienting, and modernizing a series of spaces that had accumulated over the past several decades. Former inward-facing compartments, including the main circulation stair, walk-in closets, and a corridor to the utility room were eliminated, relocated and combined with adjacent spaces and functions.  The result is a series of larger, more open, versatile, and multifunctional spaces intended to amplify the connection and response to the immediate landscape.

The goal was to reinforce the connection of site and building, to ultimately create a viewing platform worthy of the view itself.
